A country's "population" here is the World Bank's total population estimate: everyone counted as a resident, regardless of legal status — citizens, long-term residents, and refugees alike. It is compiled from national censuses, population registers, and UN Population Division estimates, not a single worldwide census taken on one day.

The figures on this page are for 2025, the most recent year with data for nearly every country in the World Bank's dataset. Countries run censuses on different schedules — some every year via registers, others once a decade — so most country figures for any given year are interpolated or projected forward from the last real count, not a fresh headcount for that exact year.

Population changes constantly — through births, deaths, and migration — so any single figure is already slightly out of date the moment it is published. Growth rates vary hugely: some countries are still growing quickly, others (including several in Europe and East Asia) are shrinking. This page reports a snapshot, not a live counter.

Known limitations: small island nations and territories, conflict zones, and countries with weak civil registries carry wider uncertainty than large countries with frequent censuses. Some disputed or partially-recognised territories are not separately reported by the World Bank and are folded into a neighbouring country's figures or omitted entirely. Treat every figure as a well-sourced estimate, not an exact headcount.

Why do population figures differ between sources?

Different sources use different reference dates, definitions of "resident", and update schedules — the UN, World Bank, and individual national statistics offices don't always publish in lockstep. This page uses one consistent source (World Bank WDI) across every country so the ranking is apples-to-apples.

Which country has the smallest population?

Among entries with World Bank data, Tuvalu has the smallest population on this list, at about 9,492 people.

Why doesn't the USSR appear in the historical data?

The World Bank dataset tracks today's countries backwards through time, each within its present-day borders. The USSR never appears as a single entity: Russia's line before 1991 is the population of the Russian SFSR, and the other 14 republics have their own separate series. The same rule applies elsewhere — Germany's line combines East and West before 1990, and Bangladesh's line before 1971 covers then-East Pakistan. This keeps every year directly comparable with every other year.
